The Google Camera app on Pixel phones has quietly introduced a new zoom slider that should make it easier to use the app with one hand.

Spotted by 9to5Google, Google Camera version 8.0 and higher includes a secret zoom slider. Above the shutter button is a toggle for switching between zoom modes – on the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5, for example, the toggle displays “.6x” for the ultra-wide camera, “1x “for the regular camera and” 2x “for the zoom in. Press and hold the button to turn it into a cursor.

While this is a handy little shortcut, it’s worth noting that it also presents a certain quirk. The cursor does not quite line up with the positions of the toggle – for example, “1x” is at the left end of the cursor, although it is in the middle of the toggle. That’s okay, but it can make using the cursor a little weird.

Of course, there are plenty of other ways to zoom in on Pixel devices. There’s the old pinch-to-zoom action, but it requires two hands. You can also set the volume buttons to act as a zoom.

For those with a Pixel 4a or older, there’s also the handy double-tap to zoom feature. For some reason, Google removed this from the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5, possibly because of the ultra-wide lens.
