There’s no denying that the cameras on Samsung’s flagship phones offer an incredibly versatile photographic experience. From high-resolution zoom to 8K video recording and other fancy stuff like dedicated Night and Pro modes in between, you get it all if you buy a modern Galaxy flagship, even if the best is reserved for the more expensive models. and the larger ones (the Ultra variants, that is).
Samsung’s camera app is also one of the most intuitive, but there’s one thing the Korean giant really, really needs to fix, and that’s how the camera app performs when you’re capturing important moments. .
Take a look at the video below showing Samsung’s camera app in action on the Galaxy S21 +. Notice how crazy stuttering and lag there is when I switch between the different zoom levels, both when zooming in and zooming out? The Galaxy S21 Ultra is also to blame, as is the Galaxy S21.
If you’ve shown this screen recording to a random person and asked them to guess if it’s a flagship phone or a budget device, chances are most, if not all , will say it’s the latter (although some will probably point out that a budget phone wouldn’t have all of these zoom levels, but that’s not the point).
Zoom 3x, 3 seconds to get there?
Unfortunately, the Galaxy S21, S21 +, and S21 Ultra are three of the most premium Samsung phones you can buy right now, and while their imaging capabilities are incredible, the experience of using all of these cameras is amazing. everything but. All this lag can often prevent you from getting the right shot on time. Some lags here and there would be correct, but I see this happening too frequently on Galaxy S21 series phones.
It’s not just the zooming in and zooming out that doesn’t happen as easily as it should. Quite often, displaying the list of shooting modes and then selecting one can also be time consuming. Surprisingly, the camera app slowdowns seem to be more pronounced on the Galaxy S21 series than previous flagships – I use the Exynos variants, but I’d bet the same slowdowns are an issue on the Snapdragon variants as well.
It’s a shame, to be honest. Samsung’s latest flagship line is generally very fast, which makes the jittery nature of the camera app all the more shocking. Samsung needs to fix this issue and fix it soon. It is due to release a software update that optimizes camera performance over existing flagships and makes sure future flagships never get the problem in the first place, because nothing is worse than buy a smartphone over $ 1,000 with the high end. cameras online only to find that the shooting experience is closer to what you would find on a $ 200 device.
