Samsung has just released the Expert RAW camera app with support for 16-bit DNG linear RAW format from all four cameras in the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

DNG files include the multi-frame HDR processing of standard JPEG images, but with the added flexibility of 16-bit RAM file. You can get the files the way you want, without worrying about losing the excellent basic dynamic range, detail, and crispness of the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s images.

DNG files also have a built-in profile for Lightroom and direct integration to export images from Expert RAW app to Lightroom Mobile on Android.

Besides DNG support, Expert RAW includes full control over shooting parameters such as ISO, shutter speed, focus, and white balance. You can also choose to have a visible histogram.

We took a few samples with the Samsung camera app in JPEG and Expert RAW in DNG and saw a virtually identical image, before editing it. But you have to process the DNG files with an application like Lightroom because exporting DNGs to JPEG with Google Photos results in a flat image without HDR processing or correction.

Expert RAW is currently only available for Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra devices, running Android 12, and through the Galaxy store. If you have such a device, but you don’t see the app on your local store, you can download the APK, provided by Tron. It apparently wouldn’t work on devices other than the Galaxy S21 Ultra.
